About Seattle

The largest city in the Pacific Northwest, and located on Puget Sound's Elliott Bay, Seattle boasts breathtaking views of mountains and water.

To the east lies the Cascade Range, featuring Mount Rainier, one of the highest mountains in the United States—and surely one of the most striking. Across the Sound sits Olympic National Park, home to the Olympic Mountains and the Hoh Rain Forest.

Lake Washington separates Seattle from Eastside suburbs such as Bellevue, Kirkland, and Redmond, where Microsoft is headquartered.

And while the area is known for its rainy weather, Seattle actually receives less precipitation per year than other U.S. cities—though it does get its fair share of cloudy days.

Perhaps it's this drizzly dynamic that prompts Seattleites' laid-back attitude, their penchant for movies (Seattle has the country's largest filmgoing population), and their well-known thirst for coffee.

With such a mild climate, and nature so close at hand, outdoor recreation—hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, river rafting, et cetera—is a big part of the local culture. Urban green spaces such as Seward Park and Discovery Park are popular destinations.

In fact, Seattle is one of the fittest cities in the country, and one of the more environmentally conscious; a recent poll showed that 90 percent of its residents recycle.

Once reliant on the aerospace industry, Seattle's economy today is vibrant and diverse, featuring companies such as Microsoft, Starbucks, Nordstrom, Washington Mutual, and Amazon.com.

With approximately 3.6 million residents, the Seattle metropolitan area is one of the country's fastest growing.
